Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Contact Lens Benefits and Applications

1. Excellent Vision

(capable to correct -20.00D myopia, -10.00D astigmatism and presbyopia)

  • Automatically corrects most corneal astigmatism

  • Provides excellent optical quality

  • Offers good surface wetting ability with tears

  • Has a wide range of progressive/bifocal lens designs available.

2. Excellent Eye Health

RGP contact lenses provide better oxygen supply to the cornea, approximately 2-3 times more than most hydrogel soft contact lenses. Additionally, RGP lenses have advanced surface wettability, which leads to fewer deposits. This results in better eye health and comfort for the wearer.

3. Easy Handling (wear)

RGP contact lenses offer health advantages due to their small size, which allows for easy handling and better tear exchange, leading to improved debris removal. This can provide a potential health advantage for wearers who want to reduce the risk of eye infections.

4. Durability

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses have a longer lifespan compared to soft lenses, meaning they do not need to be replaced as frequently.

5. Easy Cleaning

RGP contact lenses offer a health advantage as they can be easily cleaned and disinfected using simple systems, unlike conventional soft contact lenses.

6. Slow Down Shortsightedness Progression

Gas permeable contact lenses, also known as RGP lenses, offer health benefits for the eyes compared to soft contact lenses. RGP lenses allow for more oxygen to pass through to the cornea, reducing the risk of infections and other complications. Additionally, there are special design RGP lenses such as orthokeratology lenses that have been shown to slow down the progression of myopia (shortsightedness).

**Case examples:

Woman in Grey Sweater

Example 1.:

- Cathy had approximately -12.00D myopia and -3.50 astigmatism in both eyes. She was used to wear soft contact lenses for 10 hours per day. However, she experienced some common problems associated with soft contact lenses, such as unstable vision with blink, dryness and redness.

- Then, she switched to rigid gas permeable contact lenses (GP lens). Now, she's enjoyed stable, clear vision for more than 16 hours of wearing without dryness and redness.

Example 2.:

- Elizabeth is a yoga enthusiast. She had -3.00D myopia and -2.00D astigmatism. She used to use rigid gas permeable lenses since 16 year's old. Her wearing schedule was 14 hours per day, 7 days for week. She enjoyed stable and clear vision without dryness and redness whole days.

- Now, in order to manage age related reading problem, her gas permeable lenses were upgraded with multifocal reading function. She can enjoy clear distant and near vision in both office and home conveniently.

Irregular Cornea Management

When someone has an irregularly shaped cornea, like in the case of keratoconus, post-lasik, post-trauma or post-graft, their vision can be blurry or distorted. This happens because the light that enters the eye is not properly focused on the retina. To address this, specialty contact lenses with a smooth surface can help refocus the light, improve vision and quality of life.

keratoconus and scleral lens

At our center, we offer a range of specialty contact lenses to help improve vision for individuals with irregular corneas. These lenses are a non-surgical option that aims to create a smooth optical surface over the affected cornea to improve vision. Our experienced optometrists will recommend the best type of contact lens based on the severity of the corneal irregularity. We offer a variety of options, including conventional soft lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses, hybrid lenses, and scleral lenses. For individuals with keratoconus, we typically recommend larger contact lenses that can vault and protect the central cornea. The size of the lens will depend on the severity of the corneal cone. Our goal is to find the right fit for each patient to help improve their vision and quality of life.

Scleral Lenses for Irregular Cornea:

keratoconus scleral lens
keratoconus contact lenses

Scleral lenses are a type of contact lens that can help treat many eye conditions that cannot be managed with other therapies [1]. They are made of special oxygen-permeable materials that allow your eyes to breathe. Unlike other contact lenses, scleral lenses rest on the white part of your eye instead of the cornea. This makes them very comfortable and secure.

Scleral lenses can provide relief for people with various eye disorders such as keratoconus [1], post-lasik complications, dry eye syndrome [2-4], Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Sjogren's Syndrome, pellucid degeneration, chemical and burn injuries to the eye.

The use of scleral lenses has been shown to reduce the need for full-thickness corneal transplantation [5], which is a common treatment for keratoconus and other eye diseases that cause scarring and contact lens intolerance [6,7]. By avoiding corneal scarring caused by traditional small gas permeable lenses, scleral lenses can restore functional vision and delay or prevent the need for corneal transplantation by more than 50%.

If you are interested in learning more about scleral lenses and how they can help improve your vision, you can make an appointment with our experienced optometrists by calling us at Tel:21530008.

Don't settle for just any contact lens fitting assessment. At our center, we take fitting to the next level with corneal-scleral topography sMap3D and optical coherence tomography (OCT). These advanced technologies ensure precise fitting of special contact lenses like scleral lenses. With sMap3D and OCT, we can assess the cornea and contact lens with high accuracy and detail. Don't wait, contact us today at Tel:21530008 to schedule your fitting with our experienced optometrists.

Example 1.:

- Mr. Cheung had myopia surgeries (RK and LASIK) done for his right eye. The outcome was unsatisfactory, because of optical zone decentration and aberration. His quality of vision and  life was impaired. By use of glasses, his best corrected visual acuity was only 0.4.

- By use of 16mm scleral lens, the corneal irregularity was masked, his best corrected visual acuity was improved to 1.0.

Example 2.:

- Newly graduated Mr. Lau was suffered from keratoconus for both eyes. His right eye had corneal transplantation done, but the vision was only 0.1. By use of 18mm sclera lens, the corneal irregularity was masked and his vision was improved to 1.0.

- One year later, his left eye had keratoconus progressed. His visual acuity dropped to 0.4. After discussion with ophthalmologist, he decided to postpone the pending corneal transplantation for left eye. Instead, he used 18mm scleral lens on left eye to achieve visual acuity 0.8.

Dry Eye / Neuropathic Corneal Pain Management

Dry Eye Management

In addition to using traditional eye drops to alleviate dry eye, scleral lenses and eye massage methods have become increasingly popular for managing dry eye in Western countries.

scleral lenses for dry eye

Scleral lenses for Dry Eye / Neuropathic Corneal Pain:

If you are experiencing severe dry eye, large diameter scleral lenses may be a good option for you. Scleral lenses can help alleviate dry eye symptoms by covering and bathing the cornea in a protective saline solution or artificial tears, which reduces evaporation and promotes healing. This innovative solution can improve vision and comfort for those with irregular cornea and severe dry eye. At our center, our experienced optometrists can advise you on the best course of action for your unique needs. Contact us today to schedule an appointment and take the first step towards finding relief from dry eye.

Woman Doctor

Example:

- Internist Dr. Chen suffered from severe dry eye associated with immune system disorder. Frequent application of eye drops significantly interrupted her duty in hospital. She experienced photophobia, red eye, foreign body sensation and neuropathic corneal pain, because of wounds on corneal surface.

- She was fitted 14mm semi-scleral lenses in other centre. She experienced irritation and foreign body sensation, because of the small diameter of the lenses.

- Finally, she got 18mm 3D bespoke scleral lenses from our centre. After few hours of wearing, her cornea showed spontaneous healing. She used the 18mm 3D bespoke scleral lenses every day. After one year, she was satisfied with the improvement of her quality of life. She experienced no dry eye symptoms with her scleral lenses  such as photophobia anymore.
