遺傳性視網膜退化病變是一些暫時未有方法治或治療的複雜病變，包括視網膜色素變性（Retinitis Pigmentosa）、尤塞氏綜合癥（Usher Syndrome）、斯特格病變（Stargardt Disease）、老年黃斑病變（Age-related Macular Degeneration）、病理性近視黃斑病變(Pathological Myopic Macular Degeneration)等等。患者視力會不斷退化，視覺嚴重缺損，部份還有聽覺、智能及其他器官受損的徵狀。鑒於社會大眾對這類病變和病患者並不認識，政府亦未予以正視，一群病患者和熱心人士於一九九五年三月組成本會（原名“香港視網膜色素病變人士協會”），致力鼓勵患者自助自強，推動公眾教育，喚起社會對這群病患者的關注。
Retina Hong Kong (formerly known as "Hong Kong Retinitis Pigmentosa Society") is the first and at the moment the only organization of the kind among Chinese communities around the world. It is registered as a non-profit making organization under Chapter 32 of Companies Ordinance with the Companies Registry and is granted with tax exemption under Section 88 of Inland Revenue Ordinance by Inland Revenue Department. An audit system is also established. Retina Hong Kong has also invited a voluntary legal advisor giving advice on legal-related matters.
